What this route is

A one-year residence permit, renewed annually, for non-EU nationals enrolled at a Greek educational institution. Everything about it follows from the enrolment: the permit exists because you are studying, it is renewed because you are still studying, and it ends when you stop.

The application starts with an acceptance letter, so the institution comes before the immigration process. Apply to the course first.

Work rights are limited, not absent

You can work alongside study within limits, but the permit is not a route into the Greek labour market and should not be treated as one. Confirm the current hours limit with your institution rather than relying on a figure from a forum — it is the kind of rule that changes without much announcement.

Tax still applies to you

Students are not exempt from the residency test. Passing the day threshold in a calendar year makes you a Greek tax resident like anyone else. For most students with no Greek income this changes little in practice, but if you have income elsewhere it is worth understanding before your second year.

Step by step

Times below are realistic rather than optimistic, and they assume your documents are already in order. The slowest part is usually waiting for a consulate appointment.

  1. Obtain an acceptance letter from a Greek institution

Where Greece Typically Varies by institution

The letter is the foundation of the whole application.

  2. Apply for the student D-visa at a Greek consulate

Where Greek consulate in your country of residence Typically 2–8 weeks

With proof of enrolment, means of support, insurance and a criminal record certificate.

  3. Apply for the residence permit after arrival

Where Ministry of Migration and Asylum Typically 1–3 months

Submit before the visa expires and complete biometrics.

Document checklist

These are the documents the Student residence permit route asks for. Two columns matter more than people expect: an apostille is a certificate that proves a foreign public document is genuine, and a certified translation must be produced by a translator Greek authorities accept. Both take weeks, and both are the usual reason an application is sent back.

What it costs in total

Government fees are the smallest part of the bill. Translation, apostilles, insurance and legal help usually cost more than the permit itself, and they are the costs people forget to budget for.

We do not yet have published fee figures for this route that we are willing to stand behind. Rather than estimate, we have left this table empty until we can confirm them.

Budget separately for apostilles and certified translations of every document marked in the checklist above, and for private health insurance where the route requires it.

Who this is wrong for

We are not selling this permit, so we can tell you when it is a bad fit. If any of these describes you, this route will not work and you should look elsewhere before you spend money on it.

  • You have not yet been accepted onto a course. Enrolment comes first.
  • You intend to work full-time. Work rights on this route are limited.
  • You want to bring family with you. Family reunification is generally not available here.
  • You plan to stop studying once you arrive. The permit ends with enrolment.

Questions people actually ask

Can I apply before I have been accepted?

No. The acceptance letter is the foundation of the application. Until an institution has offered you a place there is nothing to apply with.

Can I bring my partner or children?

Family reunification is generally not available on the student route. If your situation depends on bringing family, this route is unlikely to work and you should look at other options before committing to a course.

What happens if I withdraw from the course?

The permit is tied to continued enrolment, so withdrawing ends the basis for it. If you are considering changing course or institution, speak to the institution’s international office before you do anything, not after.

Do I need Greek?

It depends entirely on the programme. A growing number of Greek degrees are taught in English, particularly at postgraduate level. Daily life in Athens and Thessaloniki works in English; the bureaucracy does not.

Is public university free?

Greek public universities are free or very low cost for tuition at undergraduate level, which is a genuine advantage of studying here. Postgraduate programmes often charge fees. Living costs, not tuition, are the main expense.

Does study time count towards permanent residence?

Only partially in most cases, and the rules are not something we have verified. Do not plan a long-term residence strategy around a student permit without advice.
