Reaches police, fire, ambulance and coastguard. Free from any phone, including a handset with no SIM card. Operators work in Greek, English and French. If your own network has no coverage where you are, the call routes through any available network. On a foreign mobile in Greece, 112 is the only short number guaranteed to work.

Three things worth knowing before you need them

  • Turn on Cell Broadcast alerts. 112 is also the channel for emergency alerts about wildfire, flood and extreme weather. Keep your phone's operating system updated and make sure Cell Broadcast or emergency alerts are switched on in settings. In wildfire season this is the difference between knowing and not knowing.
  • Emergency treatment at public hospitals is free to everyone, regardless of nationality or insurance status. Reported as the position since 2025. Do not delay going to a hospital because you are worried about a bill.
  • Ask for the Tourist Police if language is a problem. Calling 100 reaches the Hellenic Police, where the officer may not speak English. 171 is English-speaking by design and handles theft, scams, overcharging complaints and the reports insurers ask for.
